Chile’s craft beer scene has been booming, with small batch brew-makers growing from their garages into serious micro-brew operations over the last five years. Despite a strangle hold on the distribution of beers from the largest beer makers, a number of small brew masters have left their mark on the selection in Santiago.

This tour offers participants an opportunity to taste several different styles of brew making, plus a narration from one of our expert guides on the process that has led Chile to its current status. More than a seminar or dictation, this is a small group activity that encourages the lively conversation and good company that a good beer offers.

We start near the GAM Cultural Center in Barrio Lastarria, and will also discuss the social implications and trends behind the rise of beer culture, after all, beer was something looked down upon in traditional Chilean culture only a short time ago. Here we will sample two different beers that represent Chile in much different ways. We start by sampling one of the traditional lagers that have been Chile’s historical favorite.

Then we will move through this upcoming culinary and cultural neighborhood by foot, stopping at a brew and cocktail bar for a sampling of 4 unique beers that have stepped outside the realm of typical Chilean brew making, along with a gourmet snack. We’ll also talk about the influence that Chile’s wine industry has had on its beer.

Next we go to a unique bar and sample three beers from a brewery in the Norte chico, challenging the notion that Chile’s best beers are from the south of the country. This brewery produces the three typical favorites here in Chile: a golden ale, amber ale and a stout.

To finish we will walk through the Bellas Artes neighborhood, and then take public transportation to a pub that has become a gathering point for the craft brew industry and its beer makers, which has embraced the hoppy brews of the United States and is also an active publisher on beer in the country as well.
